MITRE’s Communications Network Engineering and Analysis Department, T861, which is part of MITRE’s Infrastructure and Networking Technical Center, seeks an engineer who is passionate about communications networks to perform research, design, analysis, hands-on prototyping, testing, experimentation, and/or modelling and simulation in the areas of Software Defined Networks (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), and other cloud-based technologies. You will work with a team of engineers who specialize in providing networking expertise on a wide variety of projects to solve our nation’s most complex problems.

Key Functions:

Perform research, design, analysis, hands-on prototyping, testing, experimentation, and/or modelling and simulation in Software Defined Networks (SDN), network function virtualization, and other cloud-based technologies. All work will require the candidate to make use of his or her fundamental understanding of and interest in networking protocols and principles as well as experience and skills in the virtualization of networks and networking technologies.

Specific duties include one or more of the following:

Network prototyping in a virtualized environment, to include:

  • Set up and configure virtual network components such as:

  • Virtual routers

  • Virtual switches

  • Virtual firewalls

  • Virtual IPSs, etc.

  • Build and use virtualized networks using a Network Function Virtualization (NFV) infrastructure

  • Use open source software to manage and automate virtualized technologies

  • Develop and program prototypes in Python or Java

  • Build virtualized testbeds and design and execute proof-of-concept experiments in a virtualized environment

  • Experiment with management and automation of virtualized technologies

Build and run network models of SDN architectures.

Software design and development in an SDN environment, including

  • Design and develop SDN applications

  • Design and develop SDN security applications

  • Integrate multiple SDN controllers to achieve high availability


Minimum Qualifications:

B.S. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field

Proficiency with Java, Python, or Perl

Proficiency with Linux OS

Coursework, experience, or skills as well as a strong interest in and a good understanding of cloud-based technologies such as:

  • network virtualization

  • network overlay

  • Software Defined Networking (SDN)

  • Network Function Virtualization (NFV)

Knowledge of TCP/IP fundamentals and related standard networking protocols

Knowledge of IP routing and layer 2 switching protocols

Preferred Qualifications:

MS or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Information Systems or related field.

Hands-on experience with any SDN/NFV open source software product, including:

  • OpenDaylight

  • ONOS

  • Open vSwitch


  • OpenStack

  • VMware vSphere

  • NSX

Programming experience with

  • Restful API

  • Netconf, or

  • Yang model

Familiarity with the configuration of commercial IP routers and Ethernet switches.

Candidate should also possess the following:
