Lead Tech Editor
MITRE is seeking a candidate with the skills and experience to provide editing, formatting, and related services to enable the organization to deliver quality documents and reports to their sponsors and the corporation to publish superior informational products. This role will also be responsible for supervising a team of technical editors to ensure workload distribution and quality standards.
Provide editing (substantive editing, copyediting, and document check), formatting (e.g., for table of contents, references, templates, etc.), and related services (e.g., 508 compliance, production support, branding compliance etc.). Assignments will vary depending on the centers’ most pressing needs and will include support to work program and sponsor-oriented materials, as well as strategic communications products. Also includes periodic writing assignments.
Proofreading for typos, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar.
Copyediting for language use, consistency, adherence to MITRE or client-specified format and style, accuracy and format of references, bibliographies, etc.
Substantive editing and rewriting to improve sense, logic, organization, flow, and accuracy; clarify language; improve conciseness; reduce wordiness; and fit space requirements. Communicate queries and comments tactfully to authors. Create glossaries, acronym lists, figure/table titles, etc.
Online editing using Microsoft Office products.
Formatting documents according to MITRE format and using MITRE report and briefing templates. Formatting other work products according to specific requirements—journal articles, corporate reports, monthly project reports, etc.
Original writing of various materials—abstracts, executive summaries, corporate communications, letters, award packages, articles, briefings, headlines, social media posts, etc.
Participate in peer review of colleagues’ work as part of effort to reduce risk of errors in materials delivered to client.
Participate in group discussion of issues relating to department’s objectives, methods, standards, etc. to assist in continuous improvement of customer service.
Excellent editing and formatting skills; ability to improve the quality of documents and reports going to sponsors and other stakeholders.
Ability to format and edit a variety of documents across all centers; understanding of the requirements of various centers and multiple work programs.
Ability to review and proof all elements of a report or communications product, ensuring content and graphics are correct as approved by contacts and clients.
Knowledge of and ability to adhere to the appropriate style manual, such as AP or IEEE Reference Style, or client-stated preferences.
Ability to communicate with and interview authors in person or online to discuss document content and collaboratively develop ideas for desired outcome.
Ability to define edits, write instructions, and present queries to generate a positive reaction and response by the client.
Familiarity with formatting tools in both Word and PowerPoint.Customer Service/Interpersonal Skills

Preferred additional skills:
Familiarity with SharePoint, Excel, Visio.
Experience in ensuring documents are 508 compliant.
8 years’ relevant experience.
Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, or related field (preferred), or
Bachelor’s degree in unrelated field or Certificate in editing from accredited academic institution, or
5-10 years of experience in the editing field or with job-relevant work.
Supervisory/management and customer service experience required.
U.S. citizenship required.
Demonstrated English language proficiency with strong written and oral communications skills.

High level of proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint and project management software.
Working knowledge of at least one industry-standard style guide (e.g., The Chicago Manual of Style).
