MITRE’s Communications Network Engineering and Analysis Department (T861), which is part of MITRE’s Infrastructure and Networking Technical Center, has as its mission to provide premier communications network engineering services for our customers at all classification levels. Our core competencies are as follows:

Our engineers have expertise in research, design, analysis, modeling and simulation, and implementation of networks across a diverse set of communication environments including virtual, wired, tactical wireless (MANET), optical, cellular, commercial wireless (LTE, WiFi, and WiMAX), and SATCOM. We are adept at combining networking research and innovation with practical hands-on experience to provide risk reduction and deployed improvements for our customers.

Most of our department is located in McLean VA, and our lab there is equipped to meet the requirements of projects at any scale. Our lab is furnished with commercial routers and switches, accelerators, cryptographic devices, test equipment (e.g. Ixia, BreakingPoint), virtualization environments, network and data center management tools, military and commercial wireless radios, modeling and simulation software and custom network emulation and wireless network planning products. There is an additional lab facility at the MITRE San Diego site with targeted capabilities and connectivity to the lab in McLean and elsewhere.

We seek to expand our department’s support of MITRE’s San Diego, California work program with local staff capable of performing communications network engineering research and analysis tasks. Specific duties will vary by project but will generally include a combination of research, design, analysis, testing, experimentation, and/or modeling and simulation of communications networks to solve our nation’s most complex problems. If a specific project requires skills or knowledge of technologies with which you are unfamiliar, your responsibilities will include reaching back to fellow department network research engineers at the McLean, VA office to bring their expertise to bear. To be clear, these openings are for design and analysis positions that are focused in the area of networking. They do not involve administering, operating, troubleshooting, or otherwise maintaining a production communications network.

Candidates should be passionate about communications networks. They should have a fundamental understanding of and interest in networking protocols and principles, as well as the desire to learn more and focus in this area.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

BS and 3 years related experience

Required Qualifications:

B.S. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field

Secret level clearance

Coursework, experience, or skills as well as a strong interest, in several of the following areas:

  • Knowledge of TCP/IP, and related standard networking protocols

  • Knowledge of IP routing protocols and VPN architectures

  • Experience with cloud technologies, data center networks, Software Defined Networking (SDN), and Network Function Virtualization (NFV)

  • Familiarity with Firewalls, VPNs, IDSs, HAIPEs, and other network security technologies

  • Familiarity with the configuration of commercial IP routers and Ethernet switches

  • Knowledge of wireless and SATCOM networks

  • Experience deploying IP network time synchronization protocols (e.g., NTP, PTP) or time-dependent applications; experience with the precise measurement of time intervals; knowledge of GPS, synchronous networks, frequency standards and counters

  • Use or familiarity with commercial and open-source network performance testing and measurement tools and techniques, including Wireshark to analyze traffic flows and troubleshoot network applications

  • Experience developing prototypes or models of communications networks

  • Experience with modeling and simulation tools e.g., OPNET/Riverbed, MATLAB, Exata

  • Proficiency with C, C , Java, Python, and/or Perl

  • Willingness to expand into and master network protocol, technology and skill areas listed above with which the candidate may not yet have experience

Candidate must also possess:

  • Self-motivation to learn new technologies and flexibility to support tasking in a variety of areas

  • Ability to obtain/maintain a DoD Secret Clearance (U.S. citizenship required)
